God of War 2 is an action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE). First released for the PlayStation 2 console on March 13, 2007, it is the second installment download in the God of War series, the sixth chronologically, and the sequel to 2005’s God of War II. The player character is protagonist Kratos, the new God of War who killed the former, Ares. Kratos is betrayed by Zeus, the King of the Olympian Gods, who strips him of his godhood and kills him. Slowly dragged to the Underworld, he is saved by the Titan Gaia, who instructs him to find the Sisters of Fate, as they can allow him to travel back in time, avert his betrayal, and take revenge on Zeus. Sony Santa Monica revealed God of War 2, now officially titled God of War: Ragnarok, during September’s PS5 showcase. No more speculation, no more rumors; it’s real and it’s coming relatively soon. Payday 2
We didn’t get much in the way of gameplay or plot details – just a brief teaser revealing the logo followed by “Ragnarok is coming” and the 2021 release window. Regardless, we can put together a few gameplay details for clues as to what might become of Kratos’s journey in the God of War sequel. It’s certainly enough to have us snapping up a PS5 pre-order at launch.
At the end of 2018’s God of War Kratos and Atreus discover Faye, AKA Mrs Kratos, was actually a giant called Laufey, making Atreus half god and half-giant, and with another name: Loki. Yes, that Loki, the one from Norse mythology who is often portrayed as a trickster, sometimes with shapeshifting abilities. God of War played pretty fast and loose with Norse mythology but could offer some hints as to what’s to come.
Once that big revelation is out of the way, we’re told Fimbulwinter is coming. If you skipped your Norse mythology class – shame on you – then know that this is a three year ‘great winter’ that proceeds Ragnarok, the Norse apocalypse.
